Royal visit to Guernsey

Thursday 19 July 2012

Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, visited Guernsey today, on the first of their two-day visit to the Bailiwick.

Their Royal Highnesses were representing HM The Queen during the Diamond Jubilee year.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall attended a Youth Showcase at Saumarez Park, which featured around 400 11-year-olds, taking part in activities such as arts and crafts, team-building games and obstacle courses. Their Royal Highnesses had an opportunity to view the Guernsey Adult Literacy Project's display of some of the organisation's 52 brightly-decorated fibre glass cows, created as part of a fund-raising initiative. They also viewed the cow which won the Queen's Cup in the Guernsey Royal Agricultural Show.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall later toured the Guernsey Botanical Trust's Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden which is undergoing restoration. They met volunteer gardeners and officially opened the newly-built Orchard House glasshouse.

In the early afternoon, Their Royal Highnesses visited the rebuilt Les Bourgs Hospice and unveiled a plaque to mark the official opening of the hospice.

Later, at a ceremony at Castle Cornet, States Members, representatives of the Royal Court, parish officials, the clergy, and representatives of the emergency services gathered to renew aloud, on behalf of the people of Guernsey, their allegiance to Her Majesty The Queen. The Prince of Wales addressed the assembled company, and said it was a "privilege and a pleasure" to represent Her Majesty The Queen, in Guernsey. The full text of His Royal Highness's speech is available via the link below.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall travelled to Herm Island by helicopter where they attended a reception on the lawn attended by Herm residents and pupils of Herm School.

On Friday, Their Royal Highnesses will visit Sark and Alderney.
