Environment Department response to a media enquiry from Guernsey Press.

Guernsey Press Enquiry:

Is there an update on the motorcycle training scheme? Is the temporary agreement to use Beaucamps still in place or has it ended and when and why?

What other arrangements are being put in place?

What is the length of the waiting list and how does this compare to the situation in the past?

Environment Department Response:

Is there an update on the motorcycle training scheme? Is the temporary agreement to use Beaucamps still in place or has it ended and when and why?

The temporary use of Les Beaucamps School for CBT training ended on 22 July. This was due to the fact that the Education Department required the return of the car parks to continue with the redevelopment of the School.

What other arrangements are being put in place?

Training is still continuing at La Mare de Carteret School each weekend and extra courses are being undertaken during the week during the school summer holidays. The Department is continuing in its efforts to secure the use of additional short-term or long-term sites to increase the number of courses that can be carried out each weekend, but despite an extensive search of private and States owned land, has not yet been able to acquire a suitable additional site.

What is the length of the waiting list and how does this compare to the situation in the past?

As a result of reducing once again to one test site, the current waiting list is now approximately 16 weeks, broadly in line with the previous waiting list prior to the reintroduction of Les Beaucamps. However, it is understood that some of the bookings that have recently been made relate to candidates who have booked sufficiently early to ensure that they have a test slot booked for when they are subsequently eligible to ride a particular category of motorcycle. Accordingly, the average waiting time 'from eligibility' will not be anywhere near as long as 16 weeks.

The Department continues to do everything that it can to secure another site to supplement the use of the current site at La Mare de Carteret School at the earliest possible opportunity.
