Public Services will be taking its message of reduce, reuse and recycle to the West Show this week
The Department will have a stand in the main tent at the show, which will showcase some of the local efforts to reduce the island's waste. It will include information on waste minimisation and materials that can be recycled locally, as well as highlighting some of the benefits this brings.
Public Services Waste Minimisation and Recycling Officer Emma Simpson said the Department was keen to take its message out to islanders.
Recently, the Department used a road show to meet islanders, and recycling experts were present at several bring bank sites helping islanders to improve their recycling habits during Recycle Awareness Week
Recycling Officer Emma Simpson said:
"The response we had was very positive. A lot of the people we talk to are already committed recyclers and doing everything they can to minimise their waste, and some come up to us with good ideas of how we can improve things which we always welcome."
"However there are also still a lot of islanders who are either not recycling at all or could do more, and an event as popular as the West Show is a good opportunity to get out and try to get the message across to as many people as possible."
Public Services Minister Deputy Paul Luxon said the message was an important one:
"Reducing the amount of waste we produce and recycling is a key part of the island's waste strategy. Islanders should be proud of their achievements to date, however we still have to do more to reduce our waste, and the best way to do that is if the whole community joins in the effort"
Twenty recycling bins for plastic bottles and drink cans will be provided around the show ground.
Show secretary Michael Best said the Committee were keen to support local recycling efforts:
"Holding an event like the West Show can create an enormous amount of waste. It is important that we as event organisers take responsibility to ensure that as little as possible ends up in landfill."
