CAB backs the Household Expenditure Survey

Thursday 06 September 2012

Guernsey Citizens Advice Bureau is keen for Islanders to join in the Household Expenditure Survey, which is being conducted by Island Analysis on behalf of the Policy Council.

Kate Raleigh, Bureau Manager said:

"There can be few Islanders who have no interest in rent increases, pay rises, benefits rates or maintenance agreements, and the thing these all have in common is the latest Retail Price Index based on this survey."

"The local RPI is entirely based on the spending patterns in Guernsey, so it is important that people join in."

Every few years an independent organisation is appointed to undertake the confidential Household Expenditure Survey which is used to weight the RPI. Researchers from local company Island Analysis have been contacting a cross section of the community to make sure that it is representative of current spending patterns of all types of households. Households are asked to participate for a two week period only, within the year-long project.

About 1,300 surveys will be needed to get a good snap shot of current spending patterns. To recognise the effort involved there will be 4 prize draws over the year for all who complete the survey with a first prize of £2,000 and 5 further prizes of £100. Some surveys started in May and the first draw will take place later in September.

Kate Raleigh explained:

"We realise that the survey can take a while to complete but we want to encourage people to join in, particularly people with young families and single parents"

"Citizens Advice believes that these people are the most likely to rely heavily on the RPI so it is important to get it right."
