Tuesday 04 June 2013

German politician and Member of the European Parliament, Dr Wolf Klinz, will visit the Channel Islands on 6 and 7 June 2013. The visit, organised by the Channel Islands Brussels Office, will give Dr Klinz the opportunity to learn more about the Islands' business and financial services sectors, and their economic links and reciprocal trade and investment with the EU.

Dr Klinz, who is a member of the European Parliament's Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, has a particular interest and expertise in the regulation of the financial services industry.

Guernsey's Chief Minister, Deputy Peter Harwood, will welcome Dr Klinz to Guernsey on 7 June and said:

"My colleagues and I are delighted that such an eminent member of the European Parliament has agreed to come to Guernsey. We have a great deal of common ground on areas such as financial regulation and combating financial crime, and I am very pleased that Dr Klinz will also have the opportunity to talk to our finance industry at first hand. This visit will further strengthen our relationships in Brussels and in Germany."

Dr Klinz said:

"There is increasing interest in the European Parliament in the role of international financial centres such as Jersey and Guernsey and in the need for the EU to work together with third countries, in particular in tackling tax evasion and ensuring effective supervision of the financial services sector. I am looking forward to the visit and to valuable input for the work of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee".

Jersey's Assistant Chief Minister, Senator Sir Philip Bailhache will welcome Dr Klinz to Jersey on 6 June. He said:

"I look forward to introducing Dr Klinz to some of Jersey's excellent work in the field of financial services regulation, as well as the diverse range of business links that we enjoy with our European counterparts. It will also be an opportunity for him to see at first hand the Island's rich culture and the heritage of which we are justifiably proud."
