New Theory Test Revision Documentation

Friday 15 May 2015

The Environment Department currently uses an ageing question bank of theory test questions previously provided by the UK's Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) but this is about to change following much collaboration between Driving Test Authorities of the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey in developing a shared database of theory test questions.

The project required a certain amount of staff input from across the Islands into question design and testing and this has helped to reduce the cost of the project at a time of budget restraint.

The creation of a new question bank has meant a reduction in copyright costs and has enabled questions to be asked that place greater emphasis on the demands of modern motoring, including safety and environmental issues, vehicle knowledge and being more considerate to other road users.  The theory test also includes the unique aspects of driving on Guernsey (e.g. filters, speed limits, yellow lines etc), as well as questions on what drivers will encounter if driving in the UK and other jurisdictions (e.g. motorways, tunnels, level crossings etc).

The general format of the theory test and the number of questions asked will remain unchanged.  Details of the test can be found at www.gov.gg/theorydrivingtests

Guernsey uses different theory IT software though to the Isle of Man to run its tests and therefore it needed to import all of the data into its current system.  This has now been completed and it is currently carrying out testing before the new questions are used.  It is anticipated that the new questions will be used in the live environment from about the middle of May.

Included as part of the joint project, is the production of a theory test training CD-ROM featuring questions and hazard perception clips which candidates will be able to purchase so drivers can practice before taking the theory test.

This CD-ROM includes additional information and explanations, so anyone clicking a wrong answer can discover why it is incorrect and is guided towards the right answer.  The new CD-ROM will include specific questions that are relevant to local driving on each Island, as well as on a wide range of subjects, some of which will be related to driving in the UK or abroad. People will be able to choose which island they live in - and selecting 'Guernsey' will ensure that no questions specific to Jersey or Isle of Man will appear.

The CD-ROM's can be purchased for £7.99 from the reception desk at the Department's offices at Bulwer Avenue.
