Update - Paper Licences and DVLA

Friday 15 May 2015

Media Enquiry from BBC Radio Guernsey:

We've had a query from a listener about changes to hiring cars abroad as the DVLA is getting rid of the paper part of the driving licence. It was a national news story yesterday. The person's query was why haven't we heard about this locally and will it affect us?

I've replied that I assume because we will still have the paper parts of our licence it doesn't apply to us but just want to check that's correct in case we get any more queries.

Environment Department Response:

The Department has considered removing the requirement for a paper counterpart over the last 2-3 years but it is not currently a priority project for us to take forward.  Nevertheless, it does remain a long term objective.  As such Guernsey continues to issue and recognise a paper counterpart.

The Department will be liaising with the main hire car companies in order to discuss their continuing acceptance of the Guernsey paper counterpart.
