A unique collection of administrative records, publications, photographs and press cuttings belonging to the Guernsey Growers' Association have been donated to the Island Archives following the closure of the association in spring 2015.
The Association was set up by a group of leading horticulturalists in 1894 with the object of mutual help and protection of the interests of the growing industry. During its height in the 1950s - 70s the GGA represented more than 1200 members. It helped growers to market their produce, provided advice to members, arranged lectures and published articles and information covering a wide range of horticultural matters.
Val Mechem, former GGA Secretary, said "we are delighted that our records, which include past Year Books, press cuttings and minute books are now safely in the hands of the Island Archives. Hopefully these will be of benefit to the island now and well into the future".
Archives' staff have completed their work in organising the records into acid-free archival packaging and cataloguing each item on a computer database. Although most of the items are in good condition, some of the books had suffered damage by insects and damp and are undergoing repair by a professional conservator.
Darryl Ogier, Island Archivist, said "the Island Archives are very pleased to receive this contribution to local history which will be preserved and made available to researchers. The collection provides a rare insight into the history of the island's horticultural industry over the last 120 years".
