Traffic and Highway Services to improve Brock Road zebra crossing

Thursday 06 April 2023

Next week Traffic and Highway Services will be making improvements to the zebra crossing at the junction of Brock Road and Rosaire Avenue in St Peter Port making it safer and more accessible for those travelling on foot.

The works will involve the installation of street lighting for improved visibility at night and tactile blister paving to assist those who are visually impaired. Currently at the end of Rosaire Avenue, the pavement ends just before the crossing, however, the new layout will provide a continuous path to the crossing, making it more accessible and providing a more visible place for those who are waiting to cross.

The timing of this work has been organised to coincide with resurfacing work that is due to take place anyway, minimising the impact of road closures on islanders. The works are due to commence on Tuesday 11th April and will last for three weeks.

This work is part of a project to review and upgrade all zebra crossings in Guernsey, to ensure they have street lighting, dropped kerbs, tactile paving and ensuring all markings and signage are consistent with Traffic and Highway Services' standards.

These works support the objectives of the Integrated Transport Strategy to improve road safety for vulnerable road users and to increase the number of journeys made by alternative forms of transport, which includes walking.

Colin Le Page, Lead Officer - Traffic and Highway Services, said:

"Anyone who uses this crossing or uses this road regularly will know that it isn't always easy to see those who are crossing until very close to the zebra crossing, particularly at night. These works will make it much safer for those who travel on foot and vastly improve the accessibility of the crossing. This will provide better connected walking routes as we seek to encourage more and more people to take up active travel."
