Launch of the new 'Disability Essentials' training on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Saturday 03 December 2022

On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the States of Guernsey is launching a new 'Disability Essentials' e-learning course which has been developed specifically for Guernsey by disability organisation, AccessAble.

It is a practical, engaging online course that will give people the knowledge and skills to provide a great customer service experience to disabled people and carers.

Disability affects 1 in 4 households in Guernsey, so understanding a little about disability and how it affects individuals will benefit everyone at work, at home and as individuals participating in the wider community.

The online training course, which can be accessed for free, has been developed with input from a number of different local organisations. The course consists of the following five modules and includes videos about the lived experience of disabled people who share their thoughts on how to provide a great service:

Dr Gregory Burke, Founder and Chair of AccessAble, said:

"'I congratulate the States of Guernsey in commissioning the disability e-learning for all of the island. This will help meet some of the challenges faced daily by disabled people in interacting with their community as well as equipping service providers and employers with the knowledge to become more inclusive. Guernsey has so much to offer its residents, businesses and visitors and it is important that disabled people are fully included."

Gill Evans, Disability Officer at the States of Guernsey, said:

"This fantastic new course includes videos where people, who have different conditions, talk about their lived experiences. I hope that by listening to their stories and experiences, it will help everyone to gain some understanding about what it's like to live with a disability and how to provide a better service for people with different needs."

The whole course takes about 1.5 hours to complete but can be done a module at a time. To access the 'Disability Essentials' course, you will need to create an account at: states-of-guernsey.accessabletraining.co.uk/login/create-account
