IVF provision

Share this page

Health & Social Care (HSC) funds a range of fertility services for islanders and this provision is set out in Policy G1029. This is an established policy and complies with NICE Clinical Guidance in its approach to surgical intervention and drug therapy for those who live with identifiable conditions which impede fertility.

Service provision in the Bailiwick includes diagnostic tests to understand the cause of infertility, medical and surgical interventions for various diagnoses. HSC also fund off-Island travel to and from Southampton for IVF treatment (or to the equivalent value), and provides prescriptions on the approved 'white list'.

Under Policy G1029, HSC does not provide any treatments that are not supported by NICE, or any artificial means of fertilisation or private fertility treatments.

In 2023 the Committee for Health & Social Care was asked to consider publishing an internal report that was prepared in March 2019 to evaluate Assisted Reproductive Technologies.  The report gave specific consideration to options for In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) provision and funding.

The report itself can be found in the below drop down after the notes.

    • The Committee has agreed to publish the report, but it should be read with the following in mind:
      • The contents of the report have not been refreshed since it was compiled in 2018/2019 and some of the information will therefore be out of date;
      • Some of the additional information which is cross-referenced in the report, such as references or links to external guidance or policy approaches, may have changed since the report was published and may no longer be accurate due to the passage of time; and
      • The Policy document 'G1029 Fertility Services' has been updated since the version that is appended to this report. The most recent version of Policy G1029 is available on the States of Guernsey website using this link: Fertility Services

    • Given the current financial challenges and the ever-increasing demands on the budget for health and social care services, it would be extremely difficult to fund any significant new service enhancements beyond what is currently provided for under Policy G1029, although this will be kept under review going forward.
