Public Services has recruited a new waste prevention and recycling officer to help drive efforts to reduce the amount of rubbish produced locally.
Emma Simpson will work with current recycling officer Tina Norman-Ross to develop and promote a range of waste saving initiatives.
In her new part time role, she will be building on experience gained from setting up recycling schemes at companies she has worked for previously, going back more than 20 years.
'I've always been very interested in recycling and reducing waste in general, principally from an environmental perspective. I am delighted now to be in a position where I can contribute to prevention and recycling here in Guernsey,'
she said.
In her new role, Mrs Simpson will be involved with all sections of the local community, to promote the message of reduce, reuse, recycle and encourage waste minimisation as an important aspect of everyday life.
She will provide advice and support for the public and businesses, as well as working with the Parishes, the voluntary sector, and in schools.
Her first foray into promoting recycling was in 1991, when she set up a paper scheme for a company she worked for in London. She has since set up similar initiatives at other firms and organisations that she has worked at.
The island's new Waste Strategy, approved by the States in February, has set recycling targets of 50% by the end of next year, 60% in 2018, and 70% by 2025.
In 2011, the household rate stood at 46.4%.
Public Services' Minister, Deputy Paul Luxon, said that her appointment would help the Department with the targets set in the new waste strategy.
'The primary focus of the new strategy to reduce waste and recycle more, and in that context this is a very important new role,'
he said.
'In recent years, as a community, we have made great strides as far as recycling is concerned. We have now set higher targets, which we believe are ambitious but achievable, and Emma is going to be part of the team driving these efforts and looking to build on the success so far.'
