Update - Traffic Safety Measures - Vauvert

Thursday 26 June 2014

Guernsey Press Enquiry:

Similar media enquiry to yesterday.

We have spoken to some residents in Vauvert following a crash last week.

Many said there was a problem with speeding and traffic calming measures such as speed bumps would help.

Has the department received any calls/complaints about speeding along the road and the need for speed bumps?

Is it something the department has considered in the past?

Will it consider installing speed bumps?

How much would it cost to put speed bumps along the road?

Any other comments.

If I am able to get a response by 4pm today it would be much appreciated as it is for tomorrow's paper.

Environment Department Response:

The Department has no record of receiving any recent complaints from residents about speeding in Vauvert, which is part of the Town 25mph zone.

Accident causation is reviewed by the Environment Department in liaison with the Guernsey Police where 'conditions' or 'driver actions' are considered to be a relevant factor. Road humps are just one of a number of potential solutions that could be proposed but should not be the automatic default.

It is worth highlighting that one of the proposals in the recently approved Integrated Transport Strategy is to create a dedicated post of Road Safety Officer. Developing systems for recording accident data, promotion of safer driving and investigation of new/improved road designs will all form part of the remit of this new post.
