Guernsey Press Enquiry:
I was hoping you could help me with a query about ormer cards.
Following the decision to introduce free buses, what will happen to cash on Ormer cards? Will there be any plans to reimburse people with money still on the cards and how will that work?
Also, can I clarify when the new system will come in - is it April 2015?
Environment Department Response:
At this particular point in time bus users are still able to top up their Ormer cards with multiples of between 5 and 50 journeys (costing between 60p and £1 per journey).
The Environment Department Board previously removed the £2.00 single journey cash fare charged to visitors and has applied a standard £1.00 fare for single cash fare journeys since Wednesday 11th June 2014. This decision was considered by the Board to be a first step towards a phased and controlled move to the 18 month free bus fare trial recently approved by the States as part of the Transport Strategy debate.
Whilst 1st April 2015 remains the most likely date for the introduction of a fully free bus fare trial, the option of introducing further fare reductions in the interim will be explored.
It is anticipated that a minimum of three months notice will be given prior to any completely free service being introduced and information on any potential change in fares in the interim will be given as soon as a firm position is known.
