Guernsey Press Enquiry:

I am following up on Friday's media release about the revised plans for the Albert Pier and specifically I'm looking at the extension of the single lane of traffic to the pedestrian crossing by the bus kiosk.

I was interested to find out why this change is being looked at?

Concerns have been raised about cars queuing to get onto the pier - which will be harder with only a single land - as well as making it harder to exit.

Can I get a response from the department about how these issues were looked at?

It would also be really helpful to get a copy of the map, showing exactly what will be happening in that area, with the planters used to separate off the current second lane into a wider walkway.

We are running something tomorrow, so can you get back to me by 5pm?

Environment Department Response:

As stated in last Friday's media release, the Environment Department's Planning Division has received revised plans for the planning application from Guernsey Harbours for proposed signs and other works that will assist the cruise tender passenger operation at the Albert Pier.  One of the main changes that has been made to the application is a widening of the walkway between the Albert Pier and the signal controlled crossing along the South Esplanade in order to accommodate the increased numbers of pedestrians that would be travelling along this route when disembarking/embarking the cruise liners.

In order to provide this widened walkway it would require the two traffic lanes to be reduced to a single lane between the Albert Pier Exit and a point a few metres south of the signal controlled crossing as shown on the attached plan which shows the current proposal.  It must be pointed out that there is only currently a single traffic lane between the Albert Pier entrance and just south of the Albert Pier exit, so the single lane would just be continued slightly further to the south of the signalised crossing.

Under this proposal, the existing two lanes would be maintained between the filter at the Town Quay / Fountain Street junction and the entrance to the Albert Pier.
