Quarantine Pests and Diseases
- Quarantine pests and diseases are those which are capable of causing significant damage to plants but are not established despite favourable conditions for them to do so.
- Should quarantine pests and diseases become established then this may result in significant crop losses, increased use of pesticides and the loss of environmental diversity due to the damage to important tree and plant species.
- The importation of plants and plant material poses the greatest risk of introducing quarantine pests and diseases. High risk consignments are targeted for import inspection.
- Island wide surveys are conducted to provide evidence that specific quarantine pests and diseases have not become established. This is needed to justify the strict import controls that are applied.
- Action is taken to prevent the spread and establishment of quarantine pests and diseases should an outbreak occur.
