Parents and carers reassured over next steps in Education debate

Parents and carers in Guernsey and Alderney are being reassured that there will be no immediate changes to admission to Secondary schools following today's decision to support the extant States resolution to move to a non-selective system of all-ability schools.

'Year 6 pupils due to sit the 11+ tests in January next year will still do so as planned,' said Director of Education, Alan Brown.

'The existing resolution means that the earliest any change to a non-selective system would be implemented is for those starting their secondary education in September 2019. That means the last cohort to sit the 11+ tests will be those children currently in Year 5.

'However, the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture still has considerable work to do to bring forward plans for the future of the education estate and how we will transition to a non-selective system. The Committee is committed to publishing these plans by June next year so that the Assembly may debate them and agree the best way forward. I would like to reassure parents and carers, children and young people, our staff and the wider community that we will continue to put the needs of all our children and young people at the forefront of this planning. I know our staff across the education service will also continue to deliver the highest standards of teaching and learning to all our pupils over the coming months as these plans are developed.

If anyone has any questions or concerns then please contact Education Services on 733000 or email educationsportandculture@gov.gg and we will do our best to answer them,' said Mr Brown.
