Pine trees, at the back of Fort Road field, to be felled for safety reasons

Thursday 27 July 2017

Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Services (ACLMS) wishes to advise the public that a group of pine trees, located at the back of Fort road field, are to be felled next week (w/c Monday 31st July).

The trees are being removed because they have become unsafe and are at risk of breaking up and falling.

This follows the incident last winter when a pine in this group of trees fell during bad weather and caused damage to neighbouring property. Following last winter's incident it was decided that the remaining group of trees should be the subject of an independent arboricultural assessment. The assessment concluded that the trees were at high risk of failure due to their very poor condition and structure. As the trees represented a real risk to property and people in the area, it was reluctantly concluded that they should be felled and replaced with new planting.

A replacement tree scheme has been drawn up using native species includes Small-leafed lime, English oak, Hawthorn, Elder and Holly. The trees will be planted this winter and the aim is to gain effective screening within two years of planting as well as provide a more beneficial habitat for wildlife.
