Monday 25 September 2017

'Everyone an artist, everyone a scientist'.

The Guille-Allès Library will be populated with interesting things to see and do from 10am - 4pm on Saturday 7 October. Visitors of all ages will have the chance to handle archaeological artefacts, have a go at needlecraft activities, use model robots, learn some origami and contribute to a collaborative art installation.

Guernsey Museums and the Guille-Allès Library have long-standing cultural links, celebrated this year with a Fun Palace. The national initiative of 'Fun Palaces' is about creating fun, cultural events and this is the first time that the two organisations have joined forces to create one together. There are hundreds of Palaces being organised all over the UK and further afield.

Representing the scientific world, the Ladies College Science team will host Harry Potter themed science activities in the afternoon during the day.

Jodie Knight, Deputy Chief Librarian: "We had a great time planning this day around the concept of 'living libraries'. This is when instead of searching for something in a book, you can ask a person who knows about it. Instead of reading, you can have a conversation with them. Fun Palaces is a chance to celebrate libraries as fun, relevant and dynamic spaces".

Jo Dowding, Access & Learning Manager at Guernsey Museums: "This day is a chance to celebrate the shared history of the Library and Museum. Every day we deal with artefacts which are labelled with the names 'Guille & Allès'; we know these men as two of the founding collectors of the Museum. The front windows of the library still bear the word 'Museum' too".

Fun Palaces takes place from 10am - 4pm on Saturday 7 October at the Guille-Allès Library. All activities will be free of charge and a timetable will be on the Museums website by Monday 2 October - www.museums.gov.gg. There is also a Facebook event page called Fun Palaces 2017.
