With the variety of news articles circulating about all the different diets, exercise programmes and get fit quick organisations out there, it can be hard sometimes for anyone to see the wood from the trees and find a strategy that works for them in terms of their long term health.
This is even more concerning considering that obesity is an ever growing problem in the UK and in Guernsey. In 2013, it was identified that over half of adults in Guernsey were either overweight or obese and males were more likely to be classed as being overweight or obese than females. This is not an unusual result and has caused the NHS to implement strategies like the Diabetes Prevention Programme to help fight the growing obesity epidemic.
In light of this problem, it is vital that effective and accessible strategies are developed to help as many islanders as possible.
HSC has launched a consultation aimed at investigating what services people have used to manage their weight before, and it will also ask what sorts of services people would want to see from the States in the future. This consultation will help inform the Healthy Weight Strategy and will be used to shape future weight management services in the island.
An online survey has been developed for this consultation. Paper copies are available at Kings Club, Beau Sejour and GP surgeries, or you can contact HSC via the details below to ask for a copy. Along with the survey, by following the link you have the opportunity to find out 'what physical activity/personality type are you?' and ideas for activities in the island that may be best suited to you!
The survey can be completed online by visiting: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/gsyweightmanagement2017
The survey for this consultation closes on 30th November 2017 and a report of the results will be published in January 2018.
