Salerie Car Park to be surveyed this weekend

Thursday 28 March 2019

This weekend, Salerie Car Park will be surveyed to assess the structure beneath the surface.

On Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st March, a survey team will be conducting a sub-surface survey using ground penetrating radar (GPR).

Over a number of years, localised repairs have been carried out to the surface of the car park in response to reports of depressions.

Salerie car park sits on land that was reclaimed from the sea in the late 1980s.  It is suspected that over time some of the fill material used to form the structure has gradually migrated, which may be due to wave action causing sea water ingress through the rock armour and fill membrane. Over time, this would potentially result in depressions at the surface.

In September 2018, a topographical survey of the surface was carried out. This provided a snapshot of the surface of the car park to assess the extent of any changes over time and is being used to monitor any reports of subsidence.

Doug Wright, Ports Commercial Manager said:

"The sub-surface survey being carried out this weekend will supplement the topographical survey carried out last year. The results should provide a detailed picture of what is going on beneath the car park, to help determine what repairs or additional investigations are required".

To ensure the whole area can be safely surveyed over the weekend, the car park will be closed from 8am on Saturday until 8pm on Sunday.
