Thursday 11 April 2019

The Overseas Aid & Development Commission ("the Commission") agreed to again match fund the monies raised by the 2019 World Aid Walk.

This is the fourth year that the Commission has agreed to match fund the sponsorship raised by the many hundreds of Islanders across the Bailiwick who put their walking boots on each year to walk around their home Island to support some of the world's poorest communities.

As in previous years, the Commission has asked the beneficiary charities to identify a specific project to which the money will be used to directly improve the lives of those living in poverty in a least developed country.

Deputy Yerby, the Commission's President said:

"The Commission is proud to continue its match-funding partnership with the World Aid Walk. For the past three years, we've doubled the amount raised by walkers, all of which goes towards the fantastic work done by local charities in some of the poorest parts of the world. The World Aid Walk is a real celebration of Guernsey's community spirit and generous hearts and the Commission is delighted to be able to amplify its impact."

The 2018 World Aid Walk raised £35,000. Amongst the projects which have benefited from the £70,000 raised by last year's World Aid Walk were the construction of shallow wells in northern Tanzania, purchase mosquito nets for families in Kagera, Tanzania, and the rebuilding of a school damaged in the Nepal earthquake.

In 2019 the following charities will benefit from the World Aid Walk sponsorship and the matched funding from the Commission:
