E&I to undertake emergency repair at the slipway at Douit Du Moulin

Friday 04 October 2019

On Monday 7th October work will begin on an emergency repair at the slipway located on the coastal road between Rue de Douit du Moulin and Rue des Salines.

This slipway was damaged in storms at the beginning of the year and a temporary stabilisation of the structure was undertaken. Over the course of the summer the stabilisation works have become undermined, requiring additional work to stabilise the structure through the winter in order that a reinstatement can be undertaken.

On Monday 30th September, following an inspection of the slipway, it became clear that, in addition to the undermining of the earlier work, there is a sizable void underneath the slipway extending for a number of metres. This is illustrated by a small section where the upper layer of the slipway has collapsed.

This now places the slipway at a greater risk of further failure and also poses a significant health and safety concern. Given the ongoing stormy weather the decision was taken to enact a repair at the earliest opportunity in order to stabilise the slipway. The neap tides on the week of the 7th represent the best opportunity to undertake the work and limit the risk of further damage.

The work will involve excavation of the void, in order to find a secure platform, and filling with concrete. The previous works will be enhanced in order to protect the exposed interior of the slipway and an additional measure of rock armour will be placed in the remaining void in order to reduce the scouring effect of the tides.

The work is expected to be completed by Friday 11th October.
