Maximum taxi fares to increase by an average of 3.09%

Share this page

Monday 27 January 2020

Having previously published details of a proposed increase in maximum taxi fares for public comment, following the consultation period the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure has confirmed an average increase of 3.09% will come into effect from 31st January 2020.

To accommodate the increase, the initial 'Standing Charge' has had to be increased for the first time in over 10 years. However, it is important to note that the distance that a customer can now travel for that initial charge has increased significantly. The taximeter will only start calculating additional fare increments of 20p after 1385.32 yards when previously it was just 246.50 yards.

The increase has been calculated in accordance with an established formula (the Halcrow Formula¹) that takes into account taxi operating costs and average earnings

The following example fares demonstrate the effects of the agreed increase:

* Tariff 1 - Normal Hrs: Mon-Fri (7am - 10pm) or Sat/Sun (7am - 7pm) max of 4 pax

* Tariff 2 - Public Holidays: Mon - Fri (10pm - 7am) or Sat/Sun (7pm - 7am) max of 4 pax

During the two-week consultation period a total of four responses were received.
