The third and final weekend in a series about Guernsey soldiers takes place on Saturday 23 & Sunday 24 July at Castle Cornet.
Soldiers' Lives: Across the Eras is a partnership between Guernsey Museums and the Guernsey Military History Company. Visitors to Castle Cornet during the weekend are invited to discover the fascinating changes in military life for ordinary soldiers, from 1860 to 1945.
At the top of the Castle, members of the living history group will be in a room usually closed to the public. They will be ready to share the stories of Victorian soldiers - from the clothes they wore, the games they played and the food they ate.
In another area of the Castle, more costumed interpreters will be dressed as the Liberation Force 135 from 9 May 1945. A fascinating bunker will be opened for the occasion and there will be binoculars and other navigational equipment for the public to look at. Members of the living history company can share previously unpublished photographs of the Castle shortly after Liberation, as well as personal family connections to the men stationed there.
Jo Dowding, Access & Learning Manager, explains more about the weekend: 'the lives of soldiers can be often glamourised in TV and film but this weekend is about real life - covering everything from food rations to washing clothes and keeping your brain busy'.
There will be special trails and prizes for younger visitors during the weekend. Castle Cornet is open daily on both days, 10.00-17.00. Entry is free with your Discovery Pass. The event is in partnership with the Guernsey Military History Company.
A note about access: car parking is suspended beyond Fishy Tales kiosk, so visitors may choose to use alternative transport.
