Variety is the spice of life at Guernsey Museum this weekend, as the Big Geekend returns on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September.

Quirky collections and unique interests are the order of the Geekend and visitors can discover anything from fossils and spinning to Japanese culture and badge-making. Jo Dowding, Access & Learning Manager explains: 'the Geekend is about bringing together people who are passionate about their interest or collections. It's about embracing what is diverse and eclectic and thinking 'wow, I didn't know that'.
For the first time, there will be a costume competition running during the weekend and entrants in full costume will be admitted free of charge. In the galleries, there will be a chance to meet artists Chris Simcox and Penny Dawes, archaeologist Phil De Jersey and experts on fossils (including dinosaurs) and flint.
There will be a minifigure hunt for the young (and young at heart) and the Guernsey Plastic Modellers Group will be displaying and demonstrating their intricate hobby. The Frossard Theatre will be used to show classic cartoons and a draw-a-long Pokémon, created by a member of the Museum team. On Sunday, the Guernsey Gaming For Good will be inviting visitors to join in with classic games like Super Mario Kart and discover some new creative games too.
Most of the attractions will be inside the Museum but some participants will be outside. This includes a display of living history from the Guernsey Military History Company. Events on the Terrace will feature acoustic musician Dave Wheeler, Morris dancing, Guernsey Dancing and the Samba Burros.
Some attractions are taking place on both days but other events are timetabled. The first of the weekend is a Geeky Tree Tour of Candie Gardens, hosted by Andy McCutcheon, at 10.30am on Saturday. This tour is free of charge and reveals the secret life of quirky trees inside the beautiful gardens.
Visitors are advised to look at the timetable if they are attending for something specific. The Big Geekend takes place on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September at Guernsey Museum from 10.00-16.00. Normal admission applies and it's free to those in full costume who are entering the costume competition. It's also free to Discovery Pass holders. (If you don't have a Discovery Pass, the prices are £6.50 for adults, £2 for students or children aged 7-17 and under 7s are free).
