Individual Liberation Day hampers to be gifted to islanders who were alive during the Occupation

Monday 10 April 2023

As part of the marking of this year's Liberation Day, the Committee for Education Sport & Culture and Collas Crill will be gifting individual hampers to islanders who remained in Guernsey during the Occupation or who were evacuated during the War and are still living in a private residence.

Five hundred hampers containing Guernsey Gâche, banana bread, loose leaf tea, butter and fresh milk, a ration card, and themed postcards, will be available to the Island's older generation in celebration of this special day. The gesture aims to spread some Liberation Day cheer and highlight the Island's appreciation of the sacrifices and hardships faced by the older generation during the Occupation.

Whilst hampers will be distributed to residential homes by Guernsey Post on Liberation Day, these individual hampers will be available for those aged eighty and over living in private accommodation or with family. This is thanks to support from Collas Crill and Guernsey Dairy.

Eligible individuals or their carers will need to register to receive a hamper by emailing hampers@collascrill.com or calling 01481 723191 between Tuesday 11 April to Monday 1 May 2023. (Calls and emails will not be monitored on bank holidays.)

One hamper can be claimed per household and will be available to collect from Beau Sejour on Monday 8 May between 9.30 - 13.00. The hampers will be given on a first come, first serve basis and only to those who register.

When collecting hampers, individuals, carers, or family members are required to bring proof of identity for themselves and the recipient, such as a passport or driving licence.

Deputy Sue Aldwell, Committee for Education, Sport & Culture, said:

'This is a lovely initiative to spread some joy this Liberation Day. Thanks to the support of Collas Crill and Guernsey Dairy, those not living in residential homes will also be able to get into the Liberation Day spirit and enjoy a special afternoon tea.'

Christian Hay, Guernsey Managing Partner at Collas Crill, said:

'We are delighted to be supporting these amazing hampers, which contain items that would have been unavailable or rationed during the Occupation. We hope they are enjoyed by members of our community who lived through the hardships of the Second World War.'

Details on how to register can be found on www.liberationday.gg and www.collascrill.com/events/2023/liberation-day-hampers/
