Holes found behind the seawall at Cobo

Friday 24 April 2020

Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Services (ACLMS) became aware yesterday evening that two holes have occurred behind the sea wall at Cobo.

One hole is in the road opposite the Rockmount. A smaller hole was found in the pavement opposite the car park near Iceland.

An engineer attended and the coast road beween Route de Cobo and Route de Carteret was closed. Signs have been placed out to warn pedestrians.

Works to determine the cause of the hole in the road will start today (Friday 24 April) and the road will remain closed until this is completed. The hole in the pavement will also be investigated.

Given the risk to the seawall and the utilities within the road, the investigations have been authorised as "essential works". Correct social distancing and hygiene will be maintained by all personnel participating and efforts made to reduce movements of vehicles and personnel as far as is possible.

People using the beach opposite the Rockmount may notice red staining on the sand in the vicinity of the investigation works.  This is an ecologically friendly red dye which will be run through the hole in the road and will mark the exit points of any air spaces on the seaward side of the wall.  Any staining of the sand or wall will disappear with the tides very quickly.
