Details of deaths registered in Guernsey between 1 January 2010 and 18 April 2020 have been examined by the Health Intelligence Unit, Public Health Services, to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on local death registrations from COVID-19 and other causes.
This analysis has shown that, as a result of people dying from COVID-19 infections, the number of deaths registered in Guernsey during week 15 of 2020 exceeded the ten year average for the same week in the period 2010-19. When COVID-19 deaths were removed, no residual excess deaths were observed for the weeks up to an including week 16 of 2020.
What this analysis shows us, at this point in time, is that we are not currently seeing excess deaths for other causes as a secondary, indirect effect, of the COVID-19 pandemic i.e. in the event that there had been reduced access to timely medical care for other conditions.
