There is one week remaining until the deadline for submitting 2022 personal tax returns and so far over 20,000 returns have been received.
Longer than usual wait times are to be expected at the Revenue Service counters at Edward T Wheadon House for the next week. If customers need to visit the counters, it may be helpful to know they tend to be less busy earlier in the morning, with the counter open from 8:45am weekdays. Additional staff will be available every day next week to help with customer queries, online filing and issuing receipts. An automatic penalty will be imposed for tax returns that haven't been received by the due date.
The easiest way to complete a personal tax return is to register online for a MyGov account and use the Revenue Service customer portal. Fixes to common problems with online filing can be found at www.gov.gg/onlinetaxhelp.
There are several benefits to filing online:
- It is quicker for the customer, both in terms of filling in the form and in terms of receiving an assessment
- Customer information can be pre-populated each year to make the process even quicker
- Filing online uses fewer resources and has less impact on the environment
- Paper returns are manually inputted by Revenue Service staff into the same system used by the online filing portal, which slows down the rate at which returns can be processed for all customers
The 2023 return will be available for online filing from the beginning of March 2024. Paper returns will be available to collect from Edward T Wheadon House from 29 April 2024.
The 2023 return is the first where each individual is responsible for their own tax affairs regardless of their marital status. The deadline for 2023 personal tax returns will be 31 January 2025. Further information on independent taxation can be found at www.gov.gg/independent-tax.
