'Walking Cycling Guernsey' app available to download for free

Thursday 10 October 2019

In Guernsey, we are fortunate to be able to enjoy the beautiful, scenic coastal and cliff paths.

However, there are also many in-land routes that can be taken including Ruettes Tranquilles.

Ruettes Tranquilles are designated lanes across the Island with a recommended speed limit of 15mph. All means of traffic can use the lanes but priority should be given to cyclists, walkers and horse-riders. Ruettes Tranquilles can be found in the Castel, Forest, St Andrew, St Martin, St Saviour, St Sampson and Vale parishes.

An app - Walking Cycling Guernsey - has been created in order to make information on Ruettes Tranquilles easily accessible to those out and about across the Island. In addition to highlighting the Ruettes Tranquilles, the app also shows the public toilets and cycle parks across the Island.

'Walking Cycling Guernsey' is available to download for free on Android, Windows and Apple devices and can be used without internet connection (offline) resulting in no charges when using the app (links below). In order to do this, please ensure that the 'Location' setting on your device is enabled. As of the end of August 2019, the app had been downloaded on 2,561 devices.

Information about Ruettes Tranquilles is also available in paper form through the guide entitled 'Life in the slow lane'. The main aim of the guide is to help people to plan their routes around the Island. The leaflet, as well as additional information and walking routes can be found online at www.gov.gg/walking. Additional information for cyclists is available at www.gov.gg/cycling. Hard copies of the leaflet are also available from the Traffic and Highway Services' reception at Bulwer Avenue and the Douzaine Rooms which have Ruette Tranquilles in their Parish.

Colin Le Page, Licensing and Operations Manager, said:

"There are a multitude of Ruettes Tranquilles across the Bailiwick. These lanes enable locals and visitors to make the most of what Guernsey has to offer. The leaflet and network document have been created in order to help people to plan their routes in advance, or to guide them should they wish to decide or change their route when out and about. All entry points to Ruettes Tranquilles are signposted and we would like to remind vehicle users that when using these lanes, priority should be given to walkers, cyclists and horse-riders."
