New filter to be installed at St Andrew's Road / Candie Road / La Vassalerie crossroads

Tuesday 24 August 2021

A new filter-in-turn will be installed on Tuesday 31 August, weather permitting, as a traffic calming measure to improve safety at the St Andrew's Road / Candie Road / La Vassalerie crossroads (also known as the Chainhouse crossroads).

Additional temporary signage warning of the new junction layout, along with the provision of bollards and LED road studs will aid drivers in using the filter.

Traffic & Highway Services (THS) has said that the installation is the next step in efforts to improve safety at the junction following previous improvements to warning signs and road markings on the approaches to the junction.

Through the installation of this filter, which relies on all drivers approaching the junction to do so slowly and with care, it is anticipated that safety at this junction will be improved. In 2020 there were 4 road traffic collisions at this location.

THS have consulted with key stakeholders on this initiative, who have in turn shown their support.

Martin Thwaite, St Andrew's Constable, said:

"The Constables have become increasingly concerned by reports of accidents, near misses and speeding at this junction. Both parishioners and Islanders will be aware it has been an accident black spot for many years, and now increasing traffic in the area has made the installation of a filter necessary. The St Andrew's Douzaine support this initiative and ongoing monitoring of traffic in the area."

As per existing policy, all new filters are initially installed on a 12-month trial basis.
